Now, when it comes to decoration, the first word that comes to many people’s minds is ‘a sense of luxury’. However, after implementing according to their own ideas, they often encounter new problems. Why is the reality different from the imagination, and why does the home lack warmth and a sense of luxury? Although there may be many reasons, the most direct and convenient way to create or remedy a sense of luxury is undoubtedly through carpets.

I wonder if you have ever noticed that carpets are indispensable in many occasions in life. For example, hotel rooms, exhibition venues, fashion show runways… Laying a carpet is like decorating a beautiful painting. It can not only add luster but also cover up flaws. No wonder it is said that a carpet is the third wall of a room. (Pictures from the Internet)

The function of a carpet is not just about aesthetics. In ancient times, carpets were also called ‘floor clothes’. Judging from the name, they were initially designed more for keeping warm. Of course, now every household has heating. A carpet can’t raise the temperature much, but at least it can give a warm and cozy atmosphere visually. Especially when there are elderly people and children at home, a carpet can also play a role in anti-slip and buffering, unlike ceramic tiles and marble floors which are prone to causing falls. Choosing the right carpet can make a space look luxurious and warm. Besides the assistance of the carpet’s texture, the important thing is that it can divide the spatial levels. The difference between having a carpet and not having one can be seen at a glance. (Pictures from the Internet)

So, how can we choose a carpet without making mistakes? What pitfalls should we avoid? I will share some personal views based on my own experience, which may give sisters some references. When winter comes, laying a carpet at home can even warm your heart.

Materials

The commonly seen carpet materials on the market can be roughly divided into five categories: natural fibers, chemical fibers, blends, plastics, and silk. Natural fibers can be further subdivided into pure cotton, wool, jute, and straw weaving materials, each with its own characteristics. Take pure cotton for example. The advantage is that the price is relatively cheap. Basically, everyone can afford it.

Even if it gets damaged or worn out one day, replacing it won’t make you feel too bad. The foot feel is also okay. It belongs to the regular type and is more suitable for laying in the living room. (Pictures from the Internet) Wool materials have long fibers, good elasticity, and high appearance value. Especially when stepping on them barefoot, it is particularly comfortable. It is suitable for laying in the bedroom to relieve the fatigue of a day.

However, it is a bit pricey and not very easy to maintain. You need to use special cleaning agents or a washing machine that can clean wool. (All images sourced from the internet. If any infringement, please let me know and I will remove them.) Carpets made of jute, straw weaving and other such materials have excellent wear resistance and are breathable in summer. However, the foot feel is relatively poor and it’s basically not suitable to step on them barefoot.

They can be used as decorations and laid in small areas in the dining room and living room, especially suitable for a rural style decoration atmosphere. (All images sourced from the internet. If any infringement, please let me know and I will remove them.) Nylon, acrylic, polyester, polyamide, etc. all belong to chemical fiber materials. They have extremely rich patterns and are wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant.

However, the foot feel is average and they are mostly used as decorations. Most of the carpets we see in public places are made of chemical fiber materials. Moreover, after a long time of use, the bottom of carpets made of this material may shed hair from the middle. Fortunately, they have a good cost-performance ratio and it doesn’t hurt to replace one. ) Blended materials should be the mainstream. This kind is woven by combining pure wool fibers and synthetic fibers. The foot feel is much better than that of chemical fiber materials and it’s not as delicate as pure wool carpets. It belongs to a relatively durable style and is suitable for placing in the living room. It can not only be used to receive guests but also looks beautiful, with a high cost-performance ratio.

(All images sourced from the internet. If any infringement, please let me know and I will remove them.) The advantage of plastic materials is moisture-proof and not easy to get moldy. They are suitable for placing in the bathroom and in front of the entrance. As for silk, it should have the best foot feel among these materials, but the price is not cheap and it’s extremely delicate, making it very troublesome to maintain.

If you have the conditions, you can choose it, but it’s not very practical for daily family use.

Size

Sometimes, even though you buy the same carpet, it may look quite different when laid in different spaces. On the premise that it can fit, you also need to pay attention to the size of the carpet. There are too many carpet sizes on the market, but there is a golden rule: buy big rather than small. Of course, it doesn’t mean the bigger the better. If you are hesitating between a difference of thirty to fifty centimeters, choose the slightly larger one.

Take the carpet in the living room as an example. You can use the sofa as a reference. If it extends 15 – 20 cm on both sides, it won’t give the feeling of squeezing the space and can visually increase the area of the living room. (All images sourced from the internet. If any infringement, please let me know and I will remove them.) Or use the coffee table as a reference. Make the length and width each exceed 30 cm.

The extra edges can be pressed under the sofa, naturally enclosing a guest reception area. (All images sourced from the internet. If any infringement, please let me know and I will remove them.) If it’s a carpet placed at the end of the bed in the bedroom, you can basically follow the standard of the living room. Increase the width by 15 – 30 cm based on the width of the bed. The exposed width is generally within 1 m, and the extra part can be pressed under the bed.

If it’s a carpet placed on the side, make the length of the carpet flush with the length of the bed, or leave a space for the bedside table. As long as the edge of the carpet is parallel to the end of the bed, it’s fine.

Patterned carpets, which are not in the opulent and antique styles such as old European or classical designs, should be avoided if they are too flashy and vibrant with more than three colors. It’s not that they are unattractive, but for those with conservative tastes, the risk of making a mistake is relatively high. Simple or regular patterned carpets are more versatile. In rooms with poor natural lighting, light colors should take precedence over dark colors. A bright carpet can visually brighten the room and make the space appear larger.

As shown in the image, when the carpet’s color matches the wall, floor, and sofa tones, with a contrast in depth, it is less likely to be a mistake. In most homes, we have white or light-colored walls, so carpets in beige or light coffee colors are suitable. Even with dark-colored home decor, there is a contrast in color.

If you must choose a patterned carpet, simplicity is preferred over complexity, and regular patterns are less likely to be dazzling. For general home use, I recommend short-pile carpets, especially in frequently used areas such as reading areas and carpets in front of the sofa, as they are easier to maintain. Thick, soft, and fluffy carpets may feel good underfoot and create a warm atmosphere, but they are particularly troublesome to clean. Snack crumbs and dust particles can be trapped inside, and they tend to shed hair when pulled. Short-pile carpets with a thickness of 1.3cm or less are just right. They offer the touch of fluff with less space for hiding dirt and are easier to clean.

When selecting carpets, you can also look at the weight. The heavier the carpet with the same specifications, the better the quality will be. You should not see any loose fluff or uneven weaving. To make the carpet more durable, you can choose double hemmed or locked edge styles, which may be a bit more expensive, but they will not curl over time, and you won’t have to replace them frequently.

For my home’s carpets, I made choices based on the considerations mentioned above. I’ve been using them for over two years now, and I’d like to share my experience:

Carpet – 01 – Coin Pattern Wool Carpet RMB 1494. My living room has many furnishings, and a 2*3m carpet fits perfectly under the sofa and coffee table, defining a reception area and enhancing its functionality. Since the living room’s color scheme is warm, I chose this mix of beige, coffee, and black colors. The pattern is attractive but not cluttered, making the space feel more open. The high-density woven wool is comfortable to walk on barefoot.

The surface is covered with short velvety fluff balls that are neither prickly nor prone to accumulating dirt.
– 02 – The Wizard of Oz Handmade Carpet, priced at RMB 2,688. This carpet is placed in the children’s room of Xiaomama. One is placed beside the bed and the other on the balcony. The length of 0.8*2m can just align with the end of the bed. Later, I customized another one, which also fits well on the balcony.

Except for a little loose hair when received, everything else is good. For small-area carpets, there’s no need to be too fussy about the pattern. Moreover, this carpet is mainly green, creating a visual difference through the gradient of saturation. It doesn’t look obtrusive in the room and can also blend with the dark wooden floor. The high-pile wool feels very soft and waxy, giving a feeling of touching wool.

It’s okay to step on it barefoot. The thickness of this carpet varies. The thinnest part is 18mm, and the thickest pile is 40mm. It’s suitable to be laid throughout the year.
– 03 – Matisse’s Blue Wool Carpet, priced at RMB 1,449. The bed in the master bedroom of my house is 1.8*2m, and this 2*3m carpet fits perfectly at the end of the bed. Since there’s enough space, I only pressed part of the carpet under the bed, exposing the large-area pattern of the carpet to enrich the ground, which looks better.

The pure white background is paired with a gradient abstract painting, neither as monotonous as a solid-color carpet nor making the space look too cluttered. The pure wool material is delicate and thick, and the quality is indeed good. This kind of carpet is not easy to shed hair or pill, and is also relatively wear-resistant. It has been laid in my house for more than two years. Without much effort in maintenance, it still looks acceptable.

The pattern is also plant-dyed, natural and healthy, and you can step on it directly.
– 04 – Royal Horse Wool Carpet, priced at RMB 1,193. This carpet has always been laid in the cloakroom. Considering the width of the chair, I chose a 1.6*2.4m one, which is just the right size to enclose the space of the dressing stool. The wool feels extremely good underfoot. Although it is made up of short wool balls, it is very flat when stepped on.

Even in winter, when changing clothes barefoot on it, there’s a sense of security. The lighting in my cloakroom is good, and the color system generally tends to pure white. So I chose a beige-brown carpet, which conforms to the general color tone and also provides a visual contrast, creating a transition between the floor and the furniture.
– 05 – Flower Brick Wool Carpet, priced at RMB 1,580. The light coffee-colored carpet matches perfectly with the warm coffee-colored wall in the dining area.

Both the style and the atmosphere are very suitable. As soon as you enter, it gives you a great appetite. The texture of Belgian wool is very good. It feels soft, waxy and thick underfoot. Upon closer inspection, there’s also a sense of carpet texture. The 2*3m one I chose can just accommodate the tables and chairs. Since it’s an open kitchen, enclosing the dining area in this way makes it look more reasonable.

The thickness is about 1cm, and it’s basically silent when stepped on.
While tidying up, I can easily let the robotic vacuum pass over the carpet. It doesn’t take a particularly long time to maintain the carpet.

Rug – 01 – Fruit Oil Painting Woven Mat RMB 16.9 is a small-sized mat, approximately 50*75cm, perfectly suited for placement at the entrance. The printed pattern on it has a color palette reminiscent of oil paintings, giving it an exquisite texture. The outer layer is made of polyester fibers, and the inner layer is pearl cotton, giving the appearance of a rattan weaving technique. The stitches are tightly sewn, and after using it for a while, the quality remains excellent.

It also serves as an absorbent mat, drying quickly from small water stains, making it a good choice for the bathroom entrance as well. With an anti-slip mesh mat underneath, it remains in place and provides a safer feeling. It is relatively easy to clean; dust and stains can be wiped off with a damp cloth, making it ideal for those who do not wish to frequently tidy up.

Rug – 02 – Tulip Plush Carpet RMB 20.2 has the right length for foot padding and looks great at the entrance without affecting the door’s operation. The one I chose, 50*80cm, is just right. It has a thick and plush feel, and the craftsmanship is impeccable. The edges are tightly sewn, ensuring it does not unravel over time. The colors are bright and vivid, and the color scheme is not too outlandish. This small area of floral pattern does not affect the overall visual sense but rather creates a relaxed and lively atmosphere. The surface fluff is fine and soft, and it can be folded 180 degrees without visible creases. In winter, it can be placed under the desk, providing a healing sensation when stepping on it with bare feet.

Choosing the right carpet requires as much thought as other soft furnishings. Of course, apart from some of my summarized experiences, it is essential to analyze specific problems. As long as the purchased carpet is comfortable to look at, it is the right one for you. If you are interested in any particular style, feel free to ask in the comments, or share your favorite styles with me. Goodnight.
